Abstract English

The transformative power of urbanization and its role in economic growth and development represents an important issue for research and discussion. The urban system is a composition of dynamically interconnected sub-systems, such as urban economy, social structure, urban ecological system ... etc. Whatever changes in any sub-systems can cause a change in the other sub-systems. This study aims to provide an analytical database for planners and decision-makers in the Nile Basin countries, which may help in planning and setting appropriate developmental policies to benefit from the positive returns of urbanization and face its challenges. The study is based on using statistical methods (factor analysis). The study reaches the conclusion that there is a discrepancy between the factors affecting the opportunities for urban transformation of the Nile Basin countries. The variation in transformation opportunities in the Nile Basin countries is explained according to the results of the factor analysis through four factors. Nile Basin countries are classified into three types according to the results correlation matrix. It is clear that despite the urbanization process in the Nile Basin countries, it still lacks a direct linear relationship with development indicators. Thus, Nile Basin countries must unleash the potential of urban growth as the potential benefits of urbanization outweigh its disadvantages. The greatest challenge lies in formulating and implementing mechanisms to exploit the positive returns of urbanization.

الملخص العربي

تعد قضية قوة التحضر التحويلية و دورها في النمو الاقتصادي و التنمية تمثل قضية هامة للبحث والمناقشة، فالنظام الحضري هو نظام مرکب من العديد من الأنظمة الفرعية الديناميکية و المترابطة فى ذات الوقت( الاقتصاد الحضري والبنية الاجتماعية و النظام البيئى الحضرى.....إلخ)، وما يتم من تغير و تحول في أى منها يمکن أن يحدث تغييراً في الآخر، وتأتي أهمية الدراسة من أجل توفير قاعدة بيانات تحليلية للمخططين وأصحاب القرار في دول حوض النيل تساعد على التخطيط ووضع السياسات التنموية الملائمة للإستفادة من العوائد الايجابية التنموية للتحضر ومواجهة تحدياته ومعوقاته، وقد اعتمدت الدراسة فى الوصول لأهدافهاعلى استخدام الأسلوب الإحصائى " التحليل العاملى"، و قد خلصت الدراسة إلى وجود تباين بين العوامل المؤثرة فى فرص التحول الحضرى لدول حوض النيل و جنى عوائده، و قد تم تفسير تباين فرص التحول فى دول حوض النيل طبقاً لنتائج التحليل العاملى من خلال أربعة عوامل، وتصنيف دول حوض النيل إلى ثلاثة أنماط طبقاَ لنتائج مصفوفة الإرتباط، و بذلک اتضح من الدراسة أنه بالرغم من أن عملية التحضر فى دول حوض النيل لا تزال تفتقر إلى ارتباط خطى مباشر مع کل متغيرات التنمية الاقتصادية و الاجتماعية، کما أن المدن الرئيسية و الکبرى فى دول حوض النيل لاتزال تعانى العديد من المشکلات، إلا أن دول حوض النيل لابد وأن تطلق العنان لإمکانيات النمو الحضري لأن الفوائد المحتملة للتحضر تفوق مساوئه، ويکمن التحدي الأکبر في صياغة و تطبيق آليات لاستغلال عوائد التحضر الإيجابية.
